2023 Outstanding Student Award
We are pleased to share the completed 2023 Outstanding Student Award Goblet, designed and made by Isabella Bedlington. Isabella is a 2023 graduate of The Glasgow School of Art and was mentored by Edinburgh-based Silversmith Bryony Knox in the design and making of the goblet.
The goblet is a continuation of Isabella’s degree show collection, ‘Contemplating the Afterlife’. For Isabella, the ideology of afterlife is rooted in time, and the cyclic nature of the torus in the goblet design represent the cycle of death and rebirth that all material things undergo. By using Keum-Boo, Isabella created a scattered dispersing pattern in fine gold that travels up and down the goblet. Meticulously creating each detail of Keum-Boo becomes a meditation that brings a timelessness to the making process, mirroring the ongoing journey of an afterlife.
The Incorporation of Goldsmiths Outstanding Student Award supports the development of emerging makers in Scotland’s rich and diverse silversmithing sector. Congratulations to Isabella on this stunning design, which is now housed in the permanent collection of the Incorporation.
