Changes to Hallmarking Charges from 1 July 2026
Dear Customer,
It has now been 14 months since the Edinburgh Assay Office last reviewed its hallmarking charges.
During that period, we have continued to experience increases in the cost of providing our services. In particular, our single largest cost remains our skilled team of technicians, whose salaries represent the most significant element of our operating costs.
As a Living Wage Employer, we are committed to implementing the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended increases. This year, the Living Wage Foundation has recommended a 6.8% increase to the living wage, which directly affects technician salary costs across the business.
Alongside this, general inflation continues to increase the cost of materials, equipment, energy, maintenance, compliance and other essential operating expenses.
Given the pressure on our operating costs, we are unable to absorb these increases in full. We will therefore be introducing revised list prices with effect from 1 July 2026.
We fully appreciate the pressure that rising supplier costs place on businesses, and we have not taken this decision lightly. However, this adjustment is necessary to ensure that we can continue to provide a reliable, technically competent and sustainable hallmarking service to our customers.
Updated price lists will be made available in advance of the change taking effect. If you have any questions about how the revised list prices may affect your account, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss this with you.
On behalf of everyone at Edinburgh Assay Office, we thank you for your continued support and partnership over the past year. We remain committed to delivering the high standards you expect from us.
Kind regards,
Scott Walter
Assay Master & Chief Executive
